SESCOM's e-mobility program has crossed a significant milestone: 320 electric three-wheelers (bajaj) are now operational on the streets of Dar es Salaam, following successful ICE-to-electric retrofitting.
The program covers the full value chain, from retrofitting the vehicles and training mechanics, to developing business models for operators and sourcing spare parts locally where possible.
Operators report fuel savings of up to 65% compared to petrol-powered three-wheelers, and reduced maintenance costs. Several operators have used these savings to expand to second vehicles.
SESCOM is now exploring partnerships with microfinance institutions to offer lease-to-own financing for new electric three-wheelers, with a target of 1,000 vehicles by 2026.
